(01) Fully Funded PhD Position 

PhD position summary/title:–Funded PhD Studentship in Dance, Communities and Wellbeing

The Centre for Health and Wellbeing across the Lifecourse at Brunel University London is offering a fully funded PhD studentship in partnership with New Adventures dance-theatre company to build a programme theory of wellbeing for New Adventures’ community dance strategy related to the flagship production of Matthew Bourne’s iconic Swan Lake, which celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2025. The research will identify the conditions and mechanisms by which community dance achieves its wellbeing outcomes and will build evidence of the impact of an extensive programme of movement and dance activity in different places with diverse participants across the UK. The proposed PhD will ensure the development of an evidence-led framework for supporting the values of New Adventures in ensuring wide accessibility for people in different places to watch adventurous performances, take part in creative movement projects and become part of the New Adventures family of performers, professional practitioners and participants.

(02) Fully Funded PhD Position 

PhD position summary/title:– Abnormal Combustion of Hydrogen in Prosperous Net-Zero Engine

Applications are invited for one full-time PhD Studentship within the Mechanical Engineering research and PhD programmes | Brunel University London funded by Shell Global Solutions. The PhD studentship is for a period of up to 48 months (4 years), effectively from 1 October 2024. The successful applicant will receive an annual stipend (bursary) of £23,000 plus payment of their full time Home tuition fees.

New energy technologies are vital in decarbonising heavy goods vehicles. Hydrogen is a carbon free fuel that helps with net-zero transition but hydrogen faces several challenges in the field of combustion due to its auto-ignition characteristics. This project aims at developing mechanisms to understand hydrogen combustion that will account explicitly for the chemical and residual gas effects under a wide range of pressures and temperatures. Software such as CHEMKIN, CONVERGE, FOAM and in-house developed MATLAB codes will be used in this research to understand Hydrogen combustion in Heavy Duty Engines.

(03) Fully Funded PhD Position 

PhD position summary/title:– AI-Enabled Subsystem-Level Condition Monitoring in Fusion Remote Maintenance – Studentship

The reliability and safety of fusion powerplants heavily depend on the proper functioning of the Fusion Remote Maintenance Systems (FRMS) and their constituent subsystems. This project aims to develop an advanced sub-system level condition monitoring (CM) approach, leveraging AI and machine learning techniques, and integrating fault tree analysis (FTA), real-time FMECA (Failure Mode, Effects, and Criticality Analysis), and maintenance scheduling. The implementation of AI techniques will enhance the capability to detect, diagnose, and mitigate anomalies at the sub system-level, improving the overall reliability and safety of the FRMS. Potential techniques that can be used include but not limited to LSTM, Transformer models, etc.

(04) Fully Funded PhD Position 

PhD position summary/title:–Fully funded Ph.D. Studentship in the Department of Health Sciences, Brunel University London to co-design and test an intervention to increase referral and uptake rates for pulmonary rehabilitation amongst people living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Pulmonary rehabilitation, an exercise and education programme for people with a lung disease called COPD, improves breathlessness and decreases the frequency of hospitalisations. National data report that pulmonary rehabilitation referral and uptake rates are low, with ethnic minority groups, those living in deprived areas, women and older people less likely to be referred. Increasing the number of people receiving pulmonary rehabilitation is an urgent research priority.

Very Brief Advice, which is widely used in the NHS, is an evidence-based behavioural change approach that increases the referral rate to smoking cessation services and uptake of smoking cessation. It involves an online training programme for healthcare professionals that provides training in Very Brief Advice. As referral and uptake are behavioural issues, adapting Very Brief Advice, a behavioural change approach, to enable healthcare workers to discuss pulmonary rehabilitation with patients may be a plausible way to increase referral and uptake rates.

The PhD project will involve intervention co-design and investigation of the feasibility and acceptability of conducting a full-scale cluster-randomised controlled trial of a very brief behaviour change approach, for healthcare professionals to assist conversations on pulmonary rehabilitation with people with COPD. The doctoral researcher will undertake both qualitative and quantitative research, including focus groups, co-design workshops, and mixed-method feasibility cohort study. With the support of Dr Claire Nolan, they will lead on patient and public involvement engagement activities and be a member of the study’s independent advisory group and trial steering committee.
