(01) Fully Funded PhD Position

PhD position summary/title:–PhD student in autonomous systems

Machine learning and optimal control are core techniques to enable an autonomous system to plan and act in dynamic and uncertain environments where actors enter and leave the environment dynamically and where the behavior of surrounding actors is uncertain. The development of theory, models, and methods to solve this problem contains major research challenges. This is a very active field of research, driven also by the development of autonomous vehicles that need to act in environments with different levels of complexity.

In this project we research new methods in machine learning and optimal control, and how they can be combined to generate robust and resilient methods for planning and control of autonomous systems. A core research question is how the behavior of the surrounding environment, e.g., pedestrians, cyclists, cars, can be predicted, and how they influence each other, and how this can be used to make probabilistic predictions of future behavior. These predictions should then be used to obtain proactive decision-making and control. The basic research and theoretical models will be evaluated in real-life datasets, e.g., in automated driving.

As a PhD student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.

Deadline : September 9, 2024

(02) Fully Funded PhD Position

PhD position summary/title:–  PhD student in quantitative logistics with focus on electric aviation

You will work within the Electric Aviation Network (EAN) project, which aims to develop decision support tools for electric aircraft network development. This includes demand modeling and market analysis, considering different types of aircraft – electric, conventional and hybrid, as well as other means of transportation. Furthermore, investment models for airports will be constructed, giving information about e.g. where charging infrastructure is needed, and how else airports need to prepare for electric aircraft traffic. Models for network planning will be developed, considering airports that today to do serve commercial traffic, and considering charging time constraints and charging prerequisites. Also, joint planning of flights between airports and more flexible unmanned eVTOL flights will be considered, as well as how these two new types of aircraft will affect the conventional air traffic management and the upcoming U-space (the unmanned traffic management system).

As a PhD student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.

Deadline :15th of september 2024.

(03) Fully Funded PhD Position

PhD position summary/title:–  PhD Student in Vehicular Systems within the SEDDIT Competence Center

The problem considers real-time planning of electric heavy-duty vehicles utilizing sensor data from the vehicle fleet. Heavy-duty vehicles have become moving sensor platforms that can be used to monitor driving and traffic conditions. This type of information is useful to plan the routes of other vehicles in the fleet and where to charge. Even though all vehicles are connected, data transfer capabilities on the road limit how much data that can be shared between vehicles. Therefore, data must be processed on each vehicle to extract information that is relevant for other vehicles, but it is also important to determine what information that should be shared and when. The project is part of the Vinnova Competence Center SEDDIT and will contain both theoretical and application-oriented challenges and will be in close collaboration with our industrial partners.

As a PhD student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.

Deadline : September 16, 2024.

(05) Fully Funded PhD Position

PhD position summary/title:– PhD Student in Energy Systems for a Project on the Role of Hydrogen in Sweden’s Energy System

The research project you will be working on aims to analyze the role of hydrogen in Sweden’s energy system, with a focus on both historical and contemporary conditions. The goal is to increase knowledge about the technical and societal conditions, risks, and opportunities of hydrogen. You will collaborate closely with a doctoral student with a social science background at Chalmers. Drawing from your previous educational backgrounds, you will work together to highlight various aspects of the role and integration of hydrogen, with support and expertise provided by your doctoral supervisors and research colleagues. Additionally, you will collaborate and have the opportunity to build your own network within the framework of the Graduate School in Energy Systems’ courses and meetings (e.g. doctoral meetings).

The research aims to provide decision-making support for companies, municipalities, and the national parliament, with an emphasis on collaboration with external stakeholders such as industry organizations and companies. The project offers interesting cases and contexts to study, with potential examples including hydrogen in agriculture, the transport sector, the energy sector, and industry. As a doctoral student, you will have the opportunity, with the support of your supervisors, to design your dissertation work within the framework of the project’s research agenda.

The doctoral position is funded by the Swedish Energy Agency through the Graduate School in Energy Systems program. As part of the position, you will participate in the activities of the Graduate School in Energy Systems, where you will also complete a joint course package of approximately 30 credits (read more at foes.se).
