PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Statistics
We are seeking a PhD student within the project “Studies of heterogeneous effects of critical life course events using machine learning” led by Anna Baranowska-Rataj (CEDAR) and Xavier de Luna (Statistics). The general purpose of the project is to develop machine learning methods to study heterogeneous causal effects of critical life course events for processes that are relevant for population studies. The candidate will work in a multi-disciplinary research group within two environments (CEDAR and USBE). CEDAR is an interdisciplinary center bringing together researchers interested in topics such as health inequalities, family dynamics, intergenerational relations and ageing, and developing new statistical methods implemented in the field of population studies. CEDAR hosts large-scale longitudinal register databases which allow examining the consequences of major life events, such as job losses, health shocks, or transitions to poverty. The PhD student project will be supervised by Prof. Anna Baranowska-Rataj (main supervisor), who is PI of the project “The effects of unemployment on health of family members (HEALFAM)” funded by the European Research Council, and by Prof. Xavier de Luna (co-supervisor) chair of the Stat4Reg Lab focusing on developing causal machine learning methods to solve scientific questions based on large-scale databases.

PhD position summary/title: Ph.D. Student position in Chemistry with focus on Molecular Geochemistry
This Ph.D. project is on the mineralization of CO2 by MgO and CaO minerals, and is funded by the Formas. The selected candidate will explore mechanisms of Mg- and Ca-carbonate formation on MgO and CaO (nano)minerals exposed to the atmosphere. This research aims to support direct air capture technologies for mitigating hikes in atmospheric CO2 levels, as well as advancing fundamental ideas on mineral growth. This work will make use of various spectroscopic methods, X-ray diffraction and possibly computational modelling techniques available at Umeå University. The candidate will integrate the Molecular Geochemistry (http://moleculargeo.chem.umu.se/) research environment of the Department of Chemistry (https://www.umu.se/chemistry) and work with various analytical platforms of the Chemical and Biological Center (https://www.umu.se/en/chemical-biological-centre/).

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in Applied Physics within PRISMAS programme – Synchrotron-based studies of Cr oxidation state in complex matrices for phosphorus recovery
The TEC-lab research environment (Thermochemical Energy Conversion Laboratory) at Umeå University is looking for an outstanding PhD candidate interested in how the local chemical environment of chromium, Cr, in secondary raw materials like ashes or biochars may impact phosphorus recovery. Cr in fertilizers is regulated both with respect to total concentration and oxidation state as its toxicity depends on its oxidation state. The complex matrix of ash fractions and biochars makes accurate determination of oxidation states for chromium near-impossible with conventional analysis. You will work in a multidisciplinary environment where chemistry, physics, and energy technology meet in advanced material characterization both in laboratory and at synchrotrons. You will be engaged in advanced material characterization of phosphorus-rich ashes and biochars of relevance for resource recovery. You will develop personal skills in X-ray diffraction, Raman and IR spectroscopy, and predictive global modelling of elements in these complex matrices. You will also be responsible for analysis at Max IV Laboratory using X-ray absorption spectroscopy and fluorescence.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student position in chemistry with a focus on environmental chemistry
Chemicals in products and materials provide large societal and health benefits, however some chemicals are ubiquitous in the environment and some have shown to cause adverse effects in biota including humans. Sustainable use of chemicals and efficient regulatory and policy actions requires expertise and tools for early identification of potentially hazardous chemicals. This project aims at developing tools to characterize and identify polymers as new and/or emerging risk chemicals (NERCs). Polymers are often overlooked in risk assessment of chemicals and here we will focus on fluorinated polymers that could degrade to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Your task will be to investigate these chemicals combining experimental environmental fate and effects studies with AI methodologies for smart text mining of big data and machine learning based modelling. Results are needed for national and international regulators and policymakers to address EU policy under the Green Deal and the Chemicals Strategy aiming for zero pollution and a toxic free environment. The project will be conducted in close collaboration with researchers at Örebro University and from different disciplines and you are expected to play an active role in interdisciplinary cooperation.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in Mathematical Statistics
What are the effects of climate change on the diversity of land birds? How many fur seals remain in Antarctica after breeding season? Do flies transmit the ‘bee’ parasite on flowers during defecation? Statistics is there to answer these big-scale and small-scale questions and to understand the world around us, each other and ourselves. When analyzing the relationships between a response and predictors, it might be natural to assume that some relationships obey certain shape constraints, such as monotonicity and convexity. Shape-constrained generalized additive models (SCAM) provide a general and powerful framework for nonparametric regression modelling with shape constraints, demonstrating their efficacy and practicality in numerous applications. The popularity of SCAMs lies in the attractive balance between applicability and interpretability. However, existing methods do not support models with large data sets, yet these are increasingly invaluable and important as technological advances across science and industry generate vast quantities of data. Moreover, efficient and robust computation is currently possible in the standard exponential family setting. The project aims to address these limitations by i) developing methods for fitting SCAM that can handle much larger data sets and more complex model structures than up to now been possible; ii) developing methods for models with response distribution beyond the standard cases; iii) developing open-source software that implements the new methods and meets the needs of scientific and industrial users within the relevant fields.
