(03) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc  summary/title:– Postdoc in fluid mechanics and heat management

Cheaper access to space provides societal benefits in the form of increased equality globally. Effective heat exchange is crucial to many industrial sectors to reach global climate goals. Additively manufactured (AM) metallic components of relatively complex shapes ultimately may result in a cheaper component. Raw surfaces on additively manufactured components differ significantly in structure and characteristics compared to traditional knowledge about surface roughness and its influence on pressure losses and heat transfer is partly unexplored ground. The study is broad and ranges from manufacturing to component design when e.g. various manufacturing parameters such as build direction have a large impact on material structure and surface roughness and in turn have a large impact on hydraulic, strength and thermal design of components. A concentrated project part will be focusing on modeling the effect of surface roughness validated with experiments and linked to surface measurement and manufacturing parameters. On a higher level, manufacturing of AM heat exchangers in a European collaboration will be managed followed by final component testing and evaluation of hydraulic and thermal performance. Cooperation with industrial partners in national and international projects is expected, including e.g. gas turbines, rocket engines and heat exchanger entities. Candidates should have proven background and interest in thermodynamics, heat transfer, computational fluid dynamics and experimental methods.

Postdoc  summary/title:– Postdoc in cell Biology and Microscopy Imaging

The AICell Lab (https://aicell.io) in the department of Applied Physics at KTH and Science for Life Laboratory is a new research group funded by the Data-driven Life Science Fellows program. The group, led by Wei Ouyang, focuses on building AI systems for data-driven cell and molecular biology. To expand the team, we are now opening a position for a postdoctoral researcher in cell biology and computational microscopy imaging. The aim is to develop wet lab protocols and analysis workflows for an AI-powered automated imaging system to actively detect, monitor and track the live human cells under drug and genetic perturbations.  The project is supported by the WASP DDLS collaboration, and in close collaboration with the Jaldén group at KTH and the Lundberg group under the Human Protein Atlas, which is a unique world-leading effort to map all the human proteins in cells, tissues, and organs in the human body.

You will be responsible for actively and effectively designing, implementing, and optimizing wet lab experiments for the self-driving microscope, including cell culture, sample preparation and microscopy imaging. Importantly, you will also actively work with other researchers in the group to develop and optimize protocols for the automated imaging system and AI models. Besides wet lab skills, you will get the opportunity to elaborate on your computational skills, e.g., by writing Python scripts to control the imaging farm, train AI models and develop automated data analysis workflows. In later stages of the project you will also design and conduct additional, custom validation experiments, which may involve different molecular biology techniques.

(10) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc  summary/title:– Postdoc in cellulose paper-based materials for power transformers

Cellulose papers and pressboards are widely used as insulators in power transformers and high voltage electrical equipment due of their good electrical properties, availability, and price. Critically, these materials must maintain both their mechanical and electrical properties at elevated temperatures in an oil filled environment for 30-40 years. With aging electrical equipment and ever-increasing energy demands, understanding cellulose degradation is a critical aspect in the manufacturing and maintenance of our electrical infrastructure.

Despite cellulose being used as electrical insulation for more than 100 years, its degradation under transformer operating conditions is not yet completely understood. Oxidative, acid-catalyzed hydrolysis, and thermal degradation all occur simultaneously over the lifetime of the transformer, each of which produce residues and water that cause corrosion and decreased mechanical and dielectric performance. This project aims to develop a deeper understanding of chemical and supramolecular structural changes that occur during cellulose degradation in power transformers, and to investigate modifications and/or additives that can increase the lifespan of electrical equipment.

This postdoc position provides a unique opportunity and environment as the candidate will work at both KTH, the Swedish research institutes RISE, and importantly in direct collaboration with the world leading provider of power transformers Hitachi Energy with access to their state of the art labs and equipment.

About KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden – Official Website

KTH Royal Institute of Technology, abbreviated KTH, is a public research university in Stockholm, Sweden. KTH conducts research and education within engineering and technology, and is Sweden’s largest technical university. Currently, KTH consists of five schools with four campuses in and around Stockholm.

KTH was established in 1827 as Teknologiska Institutet (Institute of Technology), and had its roots in Mekaniska skolan (School of Mechanics) that was established in 1798 in Stockholm. But the origin of KTH dates back to the predecessor to Mekaniska skolan, the Laboratorium Mechanicum, which was established in 1697 by Swedish scientist and innovator Christopher Polhem. Laboratorium Mechanicum combined education technology, a laboratory and an exhibition space for innovations. In 1877 KTH received its current name, Kungliga Tekniska högskolan (KTH Royal Institute of Technology). The King of Sweden Carl XVI Gustaf is the High Protector of KTH.
