This is an exciting MRC-JPIAMR funded project, titled FightAMR: Novel global One Health surveillance approach to fight AMR using Artificial Intelligence and big data mining. The research fellow will take a leading role in an EU-Africa research project, collaborating with Research Organisations, Academia, and Industry in South Africa, Switzerland, France, Italy and the UK. The aim of this research is to understand the emergence, spread and transmission of drug-resistant pathogens under the One Health concept, and to use this knowledge to develop an innovative AI-powered surveillance solution. Covering all the interconnected systems humans, animals, environment and food across EU and Africa. To this aim, we will use artificial intelligence, bioinformatics, next generation sequencing and microbiology. The successful candidate will work closely with an interdisciplinary team of academics at University of Nottingham. The role will include data analysis via machine learning, bioinformatics, sequencing and microbiology.

This role is available on a fixed term basis until 31st May 2027. Hours of work are full time (36.25 hours). Job share arrangements may be considered.

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research position in the Condensed Matter Theory group of the School of Physics and Astronomy, University of Nottingham. The successful candidate will be working on quantum many-body dynamics formulated in terms of quantum circuits. Specifically, the work will entail construction of analytically solvable models, the numerical simulations of circuit dynamics and their implementation on quantum simulation platforms.

The main responsibility of the role is to carry out theoretical and/or computational research in quantum condensed matter theory and quantum computation, broadly understood. The successful candidate(s) will also be expected to communicate the outcomes of the research in the form of publications and seminars. They will be an integral part of a team of researchers covering a broad range of theoretical areas including statistical physics, condensed matter theory, computational physics, quantum information, and machine learning. We seek motivated, skilled and highly independent researchers to complement our team.

Candidates should have a Ph.D. (or equivalent) in physics or mathematics, (or be near to completion). A strong research record in theoretical condensed matter physics, quantum computing, or a closely related field is essential.

The start date is flexible, but candidates need to be in post by 1st March 2025. The position will be offered on a full-time (36.25 hours per week), fixed-term contract for an initial period of 24 months, with the possibility of extension for up to an extra 24 months.

We are seeking a Research Associate/Fellow to support surface chemical analysis research within the School of Pharmacy as well as from other departments at the University of Nottingham. The role will form part of the Nottingham SIMS Facility team and will primarily involve the operation of a time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometer (ToF-SIMS).  Working closely with Dr. David Scurr and Dr. Anna Kotowska, the role is an opportunity to undertake research employing state-of-the-art secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) instrumentation and data analytics and will also include an opportunity to work with the 3D OrbiSIMS instrument. 

The aim of the post is to facilitate SIMS instrument access, operations and training for users (typically PhD students and post-doctoral researchers), consulting on aspects covering experimental design, data acquisition / analysis and reporting. These interactions generate multidisciplinary collaborative high impact research opportunities within the School of Pharmacy as well as within other schools including Physics, Life Sciences, Medicine and Chemistry. As well as supporting research at The University of Nottingham, the role holder will have the opportunity to develop their own areas of independent research and build national and international collaborative research projects and networks.  

Candidates should have, or be close to completion of a PhD in materials science, physics, chemistry, pharmacy (or equivalent) or in the area of chemical imaging mass spectrometry. Experience of mass spectrometry and associated data analysis is essential. Experience of ToF-SIMS, 3D OrbiSIMS, or Orbital trapping mass spectrometry would be beneficial. The candidate will be required to support research activities at The University of Nottingham through the day-to-day management of the Nottingham SIMS Facility. Candidates must have excellent communication skills and an aptitude for critical thinking and a flexible approach to collaborative research.

We are currently seeking a postdoctoral scientist with skills in Formulations for RNA-Therapeutics Delivery to join a multi-disciplinary team working on an industry-academic collaborative project “Supramolecular RNA therapeutics (SMRTs) – developing tunable formulations with scale-independent manufacture” funded by InnovateUK under the “Innovative technologies for intracellular drug delivery” programme. The objective of the Supramolecular RNA therapeutics project is to develop manufacturable RNA therapies for Triple Negative Breast Cancers. The project is led at Nottingham by Professors Cameron Alexander and Snow Stolnik in Pharmacy, and Professors Alan McIntyre, Poulam Patel and Srinivasan Madhusudan in Medicine, and will investigate novel formulations for RNA therapeutics which can be personalised for Triple Negative Breast Cancer patients. 

This post involves collaborations with the Cambridge spin-out companies Aqdot and Centillion, and will be focused on the design and synthesis of polymers that can generate “supramolecular polyplexes” which enhance RNA therapeutic efficacy while reducing toxicity of comparable non-supramolecular systems. The vision is to provide safe, low-cost formulations which can be manufactured rapidly and locally.

The work will involve direct interactions with the partner research groups at Aqdot and Centillion, with visits to their sites in Cambridge as necessary during the project. 

The post will be based across labs in the Boots Science Building and BDI. Candidates must have a PhD submitted or awarded in Chemistry or related discipline and a track record in polymer synthesis.  Experience in physicochemical characterisation techniques used in supramolecular and colloid chemistry is desirable.

The successful applicant will join our multi-disciplinary research environment and use a variety of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (or MRI) imaging and cutting-edge data analysis techniques, working across the Nottingham Digestive Diseases Centre (NDDC) and our Sir Peter Mansfield Imaging Centre. 

The successful applicant will help us to study the body’s response to a reduced lactose milk drink compared to a standard milk drink in adult individuals who are likely to have lactose malabsorption. The study will use MRI imaging to follow the journey of the drinks inside the stomach and bowel at intervals. We will also record people’s feelings such as fullness and appetite. The work will involve all aspects of the research study, from recruiting participants to running study days, analysing data and writing up scientific abstracts and papers. 

The successful applicant will be based at the Nottingham Digestive Diseases Centre (NDDC), within the academic unit of Translational Medical Sciences, School of Medicine, University of Nottingham. The NDDC is one of the largest gastrointestinal (GI) and liver academic units in the country and hosts the GI and Liver Disorders theme of National Institute for Health and Care Research funded Nottingham Biomedical Research Centre. The successful candidate will work closely with the Sir Peter Mansfield Imaging Centre which has a number of fully research-dedicated MRI scanners at different fields. 

Applicants should hold, or expect to hold, a PhD (subject area related to human nutrition, human physiology or imaging. Completion/near completion of the PhD is necessary. This project requires a highly motivated and driven candidate. The work will primarily have a standard Monday to Friday working week pattern and, depending on the MRI scanner booking schedule, there may be occasional MRI study days running on weekend days. 

NCTU are seeking to recruit a Research Associate/Fellow to work within our multidisciplinary team. The Research Associate/Fellow will have responsibility for undertaking high quality research within NCTU.

They will be expected to plan and conduct research using research methods (literature reviews, focus groups and consensus workshops), as well as building Patient and Public Involvement (PPI), writing academic papers/reports, and other dissemination activities.  

Candidates should have a PhD or equivalent in healthcare or a related subject area, or the equivalent in professional qualifications/experience, or be near to completion of a PhD. Candidates should have experience of project management, knowledge and experience of qualitative research methods and an understanding of working with under-represented groups.

Applications are invited for a Research Associate/Fellow to work on a Wellcome Trust funded project, using multiple molecular genetics techniques including high throughput CRISPRi screens, lung cell and tissue models and spatial transcriptomics in the laboratory of Professors Ian Sayers and Ian Hall (Biodiscovery Institute, University of Nottingham, UK).  

In this highly collaborative project involving the Universities of Nottingham, Leicester and Cambridge we aim to accelerate the discovery of genetic risk factors for lung function impairment, and define the mechanisms and biological pathways underpinning the observed associations. In Nottingham, we will use human primary airway cells combined with CRISPRi to identify functional causal genetic variants, genes and pathways. These mechanisms will be explored further using more complex cell and tissue models combined with spatial transcriptomics of the lung to provide novel understanding. This programme of research will improve the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of respiratory disease through mechanistic discoveries that identify new drug targets and biomarkers, and that highlight drug re-purposing opportunities. This position will be especially suited to candidates with interest in functional genomics, bioinformatics, lung cell biology and respiratory medicine. The successful candidate will also work in close collaboration with researchers in Leicester and Cambridge and additional collaborators. This post offers a unique opportunity to work in fast developing field of molecular genetics and to develop skills in state-of-the-art technologies.

Applicants must be highly motivated and self-driven, with a PhD (or near to completion) in genomics, molecular and cell biology or related area of biological science (desirably, respiratory genetics). The successful candidate will have considerable experience in some of the following areas: handling and analysing large genomic datasets, CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing and other molecular biology approaches.  A track record of publishing research and experience of primary human airway cell culture is also desirable.

The purpose of this role is to work on a Biomedical Research Centre funded project. The aim of this research is to understand the markers and predictors of surgical and rehabilitation outcomes using data from various surgery and musculoskeletal disease related projects where molecular data has been gathered.

You will join an established team, led by Professor Ana Valdes. You will have a strong background in mathematical modelling and statistical analysis and have a willingness to learn and apply various machine learning and bioinformatics techniques to omics data, for example, target trial emulation to estimate the causal effect of interventions. You will plan and conduct research using approaches or methodologies and techniques appropriate to the type of research. You will have proven skills in the presentation of research data and be able to collaborate with interdisciplinary academic colleagues at the University of Nottingham. 

The post is offered on a part time (14.5 hours per week) fixed term contract for 6 months.

The role will provide support to an ongoing new MRC programme grant that aims to exploit a novel molecular toolkit to explore cell type specific adenosine receptor pharmacology and regulation at endogenous levels of expression.  The successful candidate will join a team of postdocs supporting this programme and will be specifically involved in the study of adenosine A2A receptor pharmacology and dimerization. The work will involve novel fluorescence based assays and state-of-the-art imaging to unravel the interaction of A2A receptors with other cell surface receptors using 3D cell culture models involving multiple cell types, such as endothelial, fibroblasts and cancers cells (for cancer models).

The role holder will work closely with a postdoctoral medicinal chemist and undertake resonance energy transfer measurements (both BRET and TR-FRET), confocal and super-resolution imaging, fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS), CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing and complex molecular and cellular biology.

Candidates should have a PhD (or close to completion) or equivalent in molecular pharmacology or a related subject area, along with previous experience with using bioluminescence resonance energy transfer techniques (BRET) and both fluorescence correlation spectroscopy and photon counting histogram approaches. The candidate should also have previous research experience of the molecular pharmacological characterisation of G protein coupled receptors (GPCRs). 

The Mechanical and Aerospace Systems Research Group (MAS) requires a Senior Research Fellow who is experienced in the fields of solid mechanics and stress analysis to work across several industry-relevant projects and for the development of future group research strategy. MAS has a large intra-disciplinary team who work together to deliver research from fundamental to high level TRL. 

The successful candidate will contribute to several projects by managing a growing research team while conducting their own investigations. As a senior research fellow, they will work with the management team and help direct future group research strategy. The successful candidate will contribute to the development of several funding applications with a wide range of industrial partners and will be able to demonstrate a high degree of independence by proposing new research themes and approaches. 

Applicants who are skilled and knowledgeable in the areas of stress analysis (including the Finite Element Method), material characterisation (particularly flow stress determination and modelling), mechanical testing methods (particularly under extreme conditions), and/or the use of machine learning for solid mechanics/stress analysis problems are encouraged to apply. 

The successful applicant will work across multi-disciplinary teams and will have primary responsibility for the development of TEA and LCA methodologies and models. In this capacity the role holder will have opportunities to use their initiative and creativity to develop research methods and extend their research portfolio. Working closely with industry and academic partners will ensure models are comprehensive and suitable for informing the ongoing development and commercialisation of the technologies. The role holder will be expected to prepare their work for publication in appropriately targeted journals and other outputs.

Candidates must hold, or be about to obtain (or the equivalent in professional qualifications and experience in research area), a PhD in a relevant subject area, with a background in chemical or mechanical engineering being desirable. Experience developing process models and techno-economic assessments are requirement of this positions. Experience conducting life cycle assessments of emerging technologies is considered a strong asset. Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate with clarity on complex information is also essential.

This full-time (36.25 Hours) position will be offered on a fixed-term contract for a period of 29 months. The position is available to start from October 2024. Job share arrangements may be considered.

We are looking for an experienced researcher with expertise in the generation and analysis of quantitative education data to work in the Observatory for Mathematical Education; a collaboration between the School of Education and the School of Mathematical Sciences. The Observatory will generate state-of-the-art, evidence-driven, and policy-relevant research to improve mathematical education, learner outcomes and longer-term benefits for individuals and society.  Its remit stretches through primary and secondary maths education, to undergraduate study and postgraduate research in the mathematical sciences. 

The Observatory will explore how learner pathways and outcomes are impacted by a range of societal, personal, and educational factors, through the generation and analysis of a groundbreaking primary dataset comprising multiple linked surveys as part of the Observatory’s longitudinal cohort studies, and through the analysis of administrative datasets (e.g. the National Pupil Database).  It will also undertake additional evaluation and intervention projects in mathematics education.
