(05) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc  summary/title:– Research Fellow

We are seeking to appoint Research Fellows/Senior Research Fellows to join our National Institute for Health Research Applied Research Collaboration, Yorkshire & Humber (NIHR ARC YH) Dementia Capacity Building Postdoctoral Training Programme. The posts are funded as part of a prestigious NIHR ARC YH & Alzheimer’s Society award and will be based at the Academic Unit for Ageing & Stroke Research, Leeds Institute of Health Sciences, located at the Bradford Institute for Health Research. The successful applicant(s) will join a regional network of dementia researchers, in partnership with the Centre for Applied Dementia Studies, University of Bradford, and national NIHR ARC Dementia Postdoctoral Researcher Network.

NIHR ARC YH have prioritised research into prevention of dementia as a major evidence gap, with a focus on the 12 potentially modifiable risk factors outlined in the 2020 Lancet Commission report on dementia prevention, intervention and care. Our NIHR ARC YH Dementia Capacity Building Postdoctoral Training Programme will involve novel research to investigate:

1. Health inequalities across the diverse populations of Yorkshire and Humber.

2. How health inequalities impact upon capacity for dementia prevention within population groups.

3. How interventions to prevent dementia at population and individual levels might be tailored to be acceptable and meet the needs of different groups, aiming to reduce health inequalities.

Although these are core areas of interest for the planned work, we are also keen for researchers to outline their vision for research to support prevention of dementia, and align plans accordingly.

We anticipate appointing postdoctoral researchers with a mix of methodological expertise. This includes researchers with qualitative research expertise, including intervention co-design, and researchers with expertise in epidemiology/biostatistics, including the use of routine health and care data for research. Although experience in dementia research is desirable, we recognise that many research skills are transferable, so encourage researchers who have experience in other related areas of health and care research to apply.

Postdoc  summary/title:– Research Fellow in Robotics and Artificial Intelligence

Are you a researcher interested in developing robots that can reason about the physics of the world i.e. how objects move when a robot interacts with them? Do you have an established background in robotic manipulation? Do you want to gain experience in one of the most important technologies of the future: robotic picking and packing systems in warehouses?

In this EPSRC-funded project, you will develop planning, control, and learning algorithms for robotic manipulators. These algorithms will reason about the physics of mixed multi-object systems (e.g. a mix of items in an online delivery box). You will investigate methods to efficiently predict/simulate/learn the physics of such multi-object systems. You will integrate robotic arms, grippers, suction cups, visual, force, and tactile sensors into a complete system that can use such physics-based predictions to perform real-world picking and packing operations.

You will be a leading researcher in Dr Mehmet Dogar’s group focusing on physics-based robotic manipulation. You will have the opportunity to collaborate with our academic partners (including ETH Zurich, UC Berkeley, TU Hamburg, German Aerospace Agency and Bristol University) to develop the algorithms and systems and, test the developed approaches in real warehouse settings (our industrial partners include Amazon Robotics).

Postdoc  summary/title:– Research Fellow in Specialised Ribosomes

We are looking for an outstanding postdoctoral research fellow to join the Aspden and Davies groups at the University of Leeds. The research fellow will be part of a large team (£5.6M, funded by a BBSRC Strategic Longer and Larger grant). The team aims to unravel the ‘ribosome code’, rules that explain how compositionally dissecting ribosomes enable translation of specific sets of mRNAs. Specifically, the research fellow will focus on dissecting the molecular mechanisms by which specialised ribosomes regulate translation across multiple species, with an emphasis on Arabidopsis thaliana and Drosophila melanogaster. This will include cloning, designing transgenics, CRISPR, RNAi, phenotypic assessment and translation assays (e.g. sucrose gradients). The research fellow will work closely with others of the team who will generate ribosome complexes and structurally characterise them. Together we will be able to dissect conserved mechanisms of ribosome specialisation across eukaryotes, allowing us to unravel the ‘ribosome code’.

The University of Leeds and the Faculty of Biological Sciences are committed to providing equal opportunities for all and offer a range of family friendly policies. The University is a charter member of Athena SWAN (the national body that promotes gender equality in higher education), and the Faculty of Biological Sciences was awarded a Silver award in 2020. We are proud to be an inclusive Faculty that values all staff, and are happy to consider job share applications and requests for flexible working arrangements from our employees. Our Athena SWAN webpage provides more information.
