The position is part of the NSERC Alliance and Mitacs Accelerate funded project “Investigation of novel microorganisms and production methods to improve mixed fermentation beer quality” which is being carried out in collaboration with Blind Enthusiasm Brewing Company in Edmonton, Alberta. The postdoctoral fellow will be responsible for performing microbiological analyses on a variety of sample and experiment types, including small scale synthetic communities, samples taken from production beer, and overseeing pilot scale mixed fermentation beer experiments at the University of Alberta’s Agri-Food Discovery Place.

The successful applicant should have a strong background in fermentation, with experience in larger scale fermentations and bioinformatics analysis considered an asset. The successful applicant will work closely with Blind Enthusiasm on the collection of samples and communication of results while collaborating with the labs of Dr. Michael Gänzle, Dr. James Harynuk, and Dr. Wendy Wismer to determine how microbial community dynamics influence the quality of these complex fermentations.

The successful candidate will work closely with Drs. Xiaoli Fan and Feng Qiu, as well as an interdisciplinary team of experts, on an economic valuation of soil data project funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). The successful candidate will be offered an initial contract of 2 years, of which the first 6 months will be a probationary period. Subsequent employment is determined based on the performance, the availability of funds, and the continued need for the position.

The successful applicants will participate and lead research that applies advanced statistical, AI and ML techniques to large populational health data of patients with mental and substance use disorders. Current and potential projects include two main directions: 1) Individualized prediction of mental and substance use disorders and overdoses and associated health and economical outcomes in the population using health, survey and biological data; 2) Implementation of ML models through interactions with multiple stakeholders and people with living and lived experiences.

The successful applicants will have the opportunity of supervised access to several public and government/institution owned datasets, including large (over 4 million people) de-identified health data from Alberta. In this context, there are excellent opportunities for shared mentorship and collaboration with several PIs in psychiatry and computing science, including the Alberta machine intelligence institute (Amii).

The successful applicants will play a leadership role for several research projects in computational psychiatry, develop and participate in preparation of research grant proposals, assist in the supervision and training of other personnel including technologists, graduate students, other lab members and scientific collaborators. The successful applicant will also have the opportunity to work directly with our partners in Ministries of Alberta Government, Alberta Health Services (AHS) and Canadian Mental Health Association Edmonton, as well as international partners. The Clemente research group invites applications for a postdoctoral fellow to perform high-level complex research activities for projects in cardioimmunology. Our main research topics include immune responses in cardioncology, viral and autoimmune myocarditis. We use genetically modified mouse models to uncover the role of immune cells in these settings. The projects will expose the PDF to a wide variety of scientific questions and approaches, including exploring changes in immunological responses and understanding mechanistic relationships between the immune system and heart function

Post-Doctoral Fellow position is available at the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada. We are seeking a highly motivated candidate with a strong background in bioanalytical chemistry, mass spectrometry, proteomics or molecular biology and interests in cancer proteomics. The Shmulevitz and Baldwin laboratories invite applications for research associates to perform high-level complex research activities for collaborative projects in virology, vaccinology, and immunology. The projects aim to advance genetically-engineered viral vectors as vaccines and evaluate their efficacy and safety in animal models. Moreover, to monitor a suite of immunological and pathological responses in animal experiments. We are looking for a talented, knowledgeable and ambitious candidate to research several interesting medical-informatics tasks related to epidemiology (population disease forecasting) and bio-chemical analysis, as well as foundational topics, especially survival prediction and counterfactual reasoning, towards effectively learning personalized treatment effects. A post-doctoral position is immediately available to study the biogenesis and role of lipid droplets in neurodegenerative diseases, as part of a collaborative project between the laboratories of Dr. Simonetta Sipione and Dr. Richard Lehner, at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada.

Qualified applicants are invited to apply for a Postdoctoral Fellow position working on clinical applications of brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) for children and youth. This patient- and family-centred research program is focused on using non-invasive BCI to enable children with neurological impairments to access play, mobility, and communication. This is an interdisciplinary and intersectoral research program, involving engineering, medicine, and rehabilitation medicine faculties. Successful candidates will have strong collaboration and coordination skills to work directly with research teams at multiple levels, rehabilitation centres, and industry partners to successfully contribute to the research program. 

The selected candidate will contribute significantly to advancing GUV technologies, dedicating 50% of their time to innovative research, including the design and efficacy testing of UVGI systems. A further 20% will involve the mentorship of graduate and intern students, providing both technical guidance and safety protocols under the Principal Investigator’s supervision. The remaining 30% will focus on self-directed research initiatives and the development of funding proposals.

The postdoctoral fellow will be a collaborating member of the PRISMA research team, and mentored by Daniel Moreno De Luca, MD, MSc. He/she/they will contribute to grant writing, data analyses, and manuscript publication. In collaboration with the PI and the Physician Learning Program, leverage local datasets (e.g., claims, medications, public health datasets) for implementation science projects around genetic testing for autism; take a leading role in a new initiative in which the PRISMA group will explore challenges and opportunities to expand access to genetic testing for people with autism spectrum disorders and intellectual developmental disorder; and develop strategies to use this genomic information to advance precision medicine strategies in mental health in an equitable way. 

Applicants are invited to apply for a Postdoctoral Fellowship with the Translating Research in Elder Care (TREC) research program situated at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. TREC is a pan-Canadian and international longitudinal health services and knowledge translation program of applied research situated in long term care (LTC or nursing homes). It is multidisciplinary with approximately 30 researchers from 8 universities and 20 core decision makers; it functions in an integrated KT or partnered model. We have long standing relationships with stakeholders, end users, policy makers and our citizen advisory group. TREC maintains a cohort of 60-100 homes depending on phase and has a world-class database that has been running continuously for 17 years.

A full-time postdoctoral fellowship position is available in the Elhenawy lab at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, AB, Canada. We are interested in exploring the pathogenesis of Escherichia coli strains associated with inflammatory bowel diseases. This includes studying the metabolism of these bacteria in the host environment. Moreover, we are investigating how these strains use type IV secretion system to form biofilms in the gut. We apply cutting-edge tools such as transposon insertion-sequencing, RNA-sequencing, and microscopy to characterize the role of these bacteria in driving inflammation.

The main role of this position will be to lead the production of Health Evidence Reviews (HERs) at the request of government. It requires proficiency in systematic review (including critical appraisal and meta-analytic techniques) and scoping review methods; basic quantitative techniques; and qualitative approaches to collecting and analysing data. Strong communication skills are needed, since the position must interact with many different stakeholder communities. In addition to this main role, there will be  opportunities to engage in other research related to methods for assessing technologies, services and programs throughout their lifecycle and determining the broader social value of therapies for rare diseases as part of other grants held by members of the Unit.  Therefore, activities in which the research associate will be involved include planning, developing, conducting, implementing and disseminating research in the form of HTAs and other empirical work.
