Your research includes analysing how societal values and discourses and the political economy of the pharmaceutical and chemical industries affect the transition. Radboud University is looking for a PhD candidate to help plan future mobility and healthcare in an integrated way. The fully funded PhD position is part of the NWO-funded TRIAS project. This position is one of three PhD projects on the mobility and accessibility impacts of local and digital healthcare provision as part of an NWO-funded programme on mobility in a sustainable future.
Transport and healthcare sectors are strongly connected, but researchers, planners and practitioners hardly work together. This needs to change. Transport needs to become more sustainable, with fewer greenhouse gas emissions and less dependence on cars to travel. The digitalisation of the healthcare sector provides opportunities to deliver more local and digital healthcare and increase healthcare quality and efficiency. This can also benefit the transport sector. The provision of local and digital healthcare can reduce the need to travel and improve access to healthcare. However, to make this happen, stakeholders within the mobility and healthcare sectors must work together, and research, knowledge and tools are needed.

PhD position summary/title:–PhD Candidate: Modelling Global Biodiversity Change
In this project you will develop and apply global models to understand how biodiversity responds to human activities. Building upon the increasing availability of global datasets on biodiversity and underlying direct drivers (such as climate and land use), you will quantify how the distributions and population sizes of species and the composition of ecological communities respond to anthropogenic environmental change. You will then apply these models in scenario simulations to explore how potential future environmental change (e.g. projected climate change) as well as possible conservation measures (e.g. expansion of the global protected area network) may affect species and ecological communities globally. You will collaborate with researchers from PBL Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency to ensure that the models and scenario simulations are useful for policy and decision support.

PhD position summary/title:–PhD Candidate: Analysis and Geometry on Manifolds
The Department of Mathematics is seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate for a research position funded by the NWO ENW-M project ‘Higher Invariants of Finite-Volume Spaces’. This project is about developing and applying new invariants of certain non-compact manifolds which have finite volume. It falls in the broad area of analysis and geometry on manifolds. There are links with index theory, Lie group theory and operator algebras.
The PhD project will be supervised by Dr Peter Hochs. We will support you throughout the PhD process to engage in research, participate in local, national and international meetings, and report on your results in scientific publications. You should ideally be available to start the PhD project between 1 September and 1 November 2024. Other starting dates are negotiable, but the earlier the better. PhD position summary/title:–PhD Candidate: The Interplay of Experience and Concreteness in Smell and Flavour Languages
Humans are bombarded with perceptual information across sensory modalities. How do we communicate about these sensory experiences? For some sensory modalities, for example vision, we have a fairly extensive abstract vocabulary, with classes and categories (e.g. shape or colour words) that can be used to describe qualities of an object without mentioning specific other objects. For smell and flavour, abstract vocabularies that span the sensory space do not exist, at least not in most Western languages. People speaking these languages refer to concrete objects (‘smells like citrus’) or merely comment on whether they like the smell or not. People usually struggle to talk about what they smell and taste. At the same time, people with smell and taste expertise, for example wine experts, are able to describe why they like what they smell and taste, in addition to whether they like it or not, even though they do not have access to extensive abstract vocabulary. Experts seem able to work with the limits of their language to convey what they perceive, for example by referring to very specific objects (‘smells like bergamot’). But what strategies these experts use exactly and what effect this type of language has on the perceiver is still unclear. Non-experts may also be limited in how they comprehend language about smell. Research has shown people have difficulty activating mental representations of smells when they read smell words.
