PhD position summary/title:– Doctoral student in aeromechanics of aircraft engines
Long-term operation and unfavorable conditions may lead to degradation of the aerodynamic performance of aero-engines over time, which can increase fuel consumption alongside the emissions associated to it. Repair of aero-engine components is also very important concerning sustainability, as performance lost to degradation and damages could be recovered, avoiding costly replacements of the engine components. Improved diagnostics using sensors and advanced algorithms could thus improve material utilization and availability, thereby positively impacting in the sustainability of the aviation sector.
In this way, the research project will focus on aerodynamic and aeromechanical evaluation and detection of degraded and damaged fan- and compressor blades, and related repair actions in modern aero engines. Specifically, the main goals of the PhD work will be to design, plan and perform the experiments in a test rig, and to develop and validate suitable numerical models for aeromechanical studies of nominal, damaged, and repaired compressor blades. In doing so, the PhD candidate will also work with the development of a machine learning model trained on experimental and virtual data, able to detect when and where damage has occurred, and what is the extent of the detected damage. The PhD candidate is expected to spend a period of the doctoral studies at the University of Stuttgart, where part of the experimental campaigns will take place.
The Turbomachinery and Propulsion group at the Department of Energy Technology, which this project falls under, is a well-established research group with many years of experience from both EU projects, national program research and commissioned research in collaboration with Swedish and international industry and/or academia. This research project is part of the Swedish National Aviation Research Program (NFFP8) with funding from Vinnova. As the research foreseen by this project is to a high extent applied research, it includes close collaboration with an industrial partner in the project.

PhD position summary/title:– Doctoral student in advanced membrane characterization for redox flow battery
This project aims to gain fundamental insights into the membranes in redox flow batteries (RFBs) through combining electrochemical cell investigations at KTH with advanced characterization techniques using X-rays and neutrons in combination with molecular dynamics simulations at DTU. In terms of costs and output power, the membrane is a critical component that should meet the requirements of high ion conductivity, low permeability of redox species, and high chemical and mechanical stability. To advance the development of membranes more research is needed to understand the relationship between structural properties and performance. RFBs are safe and cost-effective for stationary and long-duration energy storage (> 6h), as the energy and power can be scaled independently. The project is performed within the Nordic 5 Tech Research School in Batteries. The PhD student will spend periods, together at least a year at DTU in Copenhagen and attend Nordic 5 Tech activities and courses. We are searching for a person with interest in electrochemistry, batteries and material characterization.

PhD position summary/title:– Doctoral student in Molecular simulation of wetting
The energetics and dynamics of wetting are of high interest from both fundamental scientific and technological points of view. Often the macroscopic behavior of wetting is dominated by processes at molecular scale at the interface. Here in particular the three-phase contact line is of importance, where substrate, liquid and gas (or another liquid) meet. The scales involved can not be observed directly in experiments. Atomistic molecular dynamics simulations can provide the required spatial and time resolutions. In this project we will study how mixtures of two liquids or a liquid plus surfactant wet surfaces. The surfaces can be either simple or have molecules attached to them that interact with the liquid in different ways. In experiments non-trivial behavior has been observed. There can be several reasons for this, e.g. preferential wetting of the substrate by one of the liquids (energetics), but also differences in dynamic behavior of liquids at the contact line. Molecular dynamics simulations enable us to disentangle such effects and will allow to rationalize behavior observed in experiments. As a further step, we might be able to capture certain types of behavior as boundary conditions or extensions of continuum models, which are being developed together with collaborators at the department of Mechanics.
This position as a PhD student is within a collaborative environment that is shared with the department of Mechanics, where there is development of continuum methods as well as experiments. The environment is multi-disciplinary, international and includes the main developers of the popular GROMACS molecular simulation package, which will be used in this project.

PhD position summary/title:– Doctoral student in sodium-ion batteries – hard carbon and its interphases
Sodium-ion batteries are potentially a low-price and more environmentally friendly alternative to lithium-ion batteries simply because sodium is more abundant than lithium. In sodium-ion batteries, the negative electrode material is typically hard carbon which, unlike graphite used in lithium-ion batteries, is a more disordered and unexplored material. Mixing silicon into the electrode can likely increase the capacity, but more knowledge is needed about how the materials work together in the electrode, and how sodium ions are taken up, stored, and released, as well as how the interaction with the electrolyte and other components in the electrode affects these processes. In the project, we want to use a flora of spectroscopic, microscopic and electrochemical techniques such as MS, FTIR, XPS, NMR, GITT and EIS, preferably in combination in situ or in operando. The project is a collaboration between KTH Stockholm and NTNU in Trondheim and is part of a battery research school between the five largest technical universities in the Nordics, Nordic 5 Tech. The collaboration means that the doctoral student will be supervised and spend periods at both universities and will attend Nordic 5 Tech activities and courses.
