Postdoc  summary/title:– 2-yr postdoc on Vegetation-climate interactions under rising biosphere novelty

The main aim of this postdoc project is to assess the capacity of vegetation to maintain diversity and ecological functioning (resilience) and mitigate climate change (carbon pools and accumulation) under ongoing global change, notably climate change and biotic globalization. To address, this overarching, complex question several research approaches may be used in various combinations, e.g., statistical, and process-based plant diversity and vegetation modelling, remote sensing, meta-analyses, existing paleoecological data, and field-based work in ECONOVO’s study areas in Europe and South Africa. Key topics of interest include the role played by plant diversity, megafauna-linked trophic complexity, and geodiversity. We are open to hearing the candidate’s take on this and would like the postdoc to contribute ideas and concepts to the project and lead at least three high-quality papers in this research area. We also emphasize the importance of engaging fully in the center’s outreach and educational efforts, while also supporting and encouraging collaborative work with ECONOVO colleagues, including students. This collaboration involves sharing skills and contributing to problem-solving within the postdoc’s area of expertise.

(05) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc  summary/title:– Postdoc in ultrastructural examination of autophagy in health and neurodegenerative diseases

Autophagy is a catabolic process highly conserved among eukaryotes, which is involved in the degradation of long-lived proteins, aberrant complexes and aggregates, dysfunctional and superfluous organelles, and intracellular pathogens. Structures targeted to destruction, including intracellular organelles, are sequestered by double-membrane vesicles called autophagosomes and delivered to lysosomes for turnover. The key actors of autophagy are the autophagy-related (ATG) proteins. Autophagy can be highly selective and target specific unwanted structures using the so-called selective autophagy receptors (SARs) and various adaptor proteins.

The overall aim of the project is to understand the selective and bulk autophagy mechanisms at the ultrastructural levels by studying these mechanisms in healthy or neurodegenerative conditions.

(09) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc  summary/title:– Two-year Postdoc (extendable) in AI and Remote Sensing to Monitor Earthworms in the Field

Soil health is the foundation of our food systems, yet we are losing topsoil at an alarming rate due to land use. To combat this, we must shift from extractive to restorative, circular agriculture. This transition requires extensive research on decomposers, particularly earthworms, which are essential for soil health. Although their subterranean lifestyle poses observational challenges, recent advances in remote sensing and deep learning offer a unique opportunity to finally track these elusive organisms, which could have a profound impact on ecology and agriculture.

To increase our monitoring efforts and coverage, the successful candidate will adapt and create novel technologies (using vision, acoustics, capacitance, etc.) to monitor earthworms non-invasively and at high temporal resolution, in the field. Using a combination of these new tools, together with modern analysis approaches (e.g., deep learning), the candidate will be able to quantify and qualify “earthworm activity” at a given time and location and eventually address unanswered questions on earthworm behaviour and demography.

This method-driven project involves a very high degree of collaboration and creativity. We expect the candidate to network within and outside the group and use their experience to propose appropriate solutions to this problem. Accordingly, we value candidates who propose “out-of-the-box” alternatives to the solutions we originally envisaged.

Postdoc  summary/title:– Postdoctoral position in research project on international healthcare labor, Aarhus University

The position is part of the MORE project, which is part of King Frederik Center for Public Leadership. In the 5-year project funded by the Carlsberg Foundation (9.1 million DKK), we aim to understand recruitment, selection, and retention of international healthcare staff with a focus on the European labor market. There is an immense and increasing lack of healthcare staff, which threatens public health and is one of the most pressing policy problems in Western countries. Although studies highlight the benefits of increased labor mobility, the research-based knowledge about how to ensure a successful international labor market is limited. The project aims to contribute with solid scientific evidence about effective solutions to international recruitment, personnel selection as well as onboarding improvements to prevent turnover at the earliest stages. We initiate both qualitative studies, surveys to employers and experts, and at least three large-scale field experiments in collaboration with healthcare employers in Denmark.

The research team consists of researchers from Aarhus University and The People Lab, Harvard University, and we also work closely with leading researcher in the field through an international research network established in relation to the project. The research is co-designed with Danish healthcare organizations, healthcare staff, an advisory board consisting of leading national stakeholders, and the project’s implementation partner, Copenhagen Capacity.

(16) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc  summary/title:– Postdoc in Qualitative Design Research (readvertisement)

The number of Danish university students experiencing anxiety in their studies is growing due to stressful factors of studies coupled with individual performance requirements, for example, the pursuit of good grades. The education reform suggested by the Danish government might worsen the situation by asking students to complete their studies faster and more efficiently. To help university students cope with their growing study-related anxiety and prevent it from developing into more severe mental health issues, this project investigates how smart garment-based wearables could be designed to allow shared management of student anxiety with their close ones (that is, a close friend, family member, or partner) in the university context. In this approach, the student with anxiety is not left alone to cope but gets meaningful tangible support in real-time in situ through a soft garment type of smart wearable that is wirelessly connected to the support person’s wearable.

The project will apply a qualitative research approach to understand university students’ experiences with study-related anxiety. The resulting knowledge is utilised in the iterative constructive design of artefacts (that is, speculative or conceptual artefacts and functional prototypes) to investigate stakeholders’ subjective lived experiences with the wearables in the actual use contexts. The project aims to offer insights into the shared management of anxiety in study-related contexts and how to realise wearables for the alleviation of student anxiety.
