Postdoc  summary/title:– Postdocs (3) in Solid Oxide Cells: Cell Development and Stack Design & Fabrication – DTU Energy

The removal of fossil fuels in the energy and transport sector is an important ambition, seconded by specific targets in several parts of the world. In this context, shares of electricity production from wind and solar are increasing. The fluctuating and interruptive nature of these sources requires means of storage and “difficult-to-electrify” sectors like shipping and aviation need green fuels. Solid oxide electrolysis (SOE) technologies owing to their high efficiencies can solve this challenge by converting excess electricity into storable compounds such as hydrogen and high energy density transportation fuels. Conventional SOE has reached a matureness allowing for demonstration and field-testing, based on electrolyte- or fuel-electrode-supported configurations.

To enhance the efficiency of this technology even further, DTU is spearheading the development of the next generation of Solid Oxide Electrolysers capable of operating at lower temperatures while maintaining higher efficiency. Moreover, to guarantee widespread industrial adoption of these developed cells, the fabrication processes used in manufacturing must be both scalable and robust.

Postdoc  summary/title:– Postdoc in studying electrocatalysts with 3D active site structures – DTU Energy

If you are establishing your career as a scientist in the field of experimental electrocatalysis and you are looking for opportunities to fulfill your dreams and ambitions, it is right here in front of you.

Electrocatalysts are essential materials for producing fuels and chemicals through electrified chemical processes, known as Power-to-X. Conventional electrocatalysts with two-dimensional (2D) active sites have a fundamentally limited efficiency for facilitating reactions involving three or more reaction intermediates due to the so-called “scaling relationship”. In CAT3D, the five-year Villum Young Investigator project that fully covers this postdoc position, we aim to overcome this fundamental limitation by studying electrocatalysts with three-dimensional (3D) active site structures. This study could open the door for obtaining radically better electrocatalysts in terms of activity, selectivity, and stability.

At DTU Energy, we have been carrying out R&D in sustainable energy conversion technologies for decades. We are among the world’s leaders in research and development in this area. We have excellent facilities and competencies to carry out research from fundamental studies of electrochemical materials to the fabrication of lab-scale components and devices.

At DTU Sustain you will break new ground at the absolute forefront of science providing solutions to major societal challenges related to climate change, sustainability, and infrastructure.

We offer a postdoc position for a motivated candidate to join the Energy Foundations project and conduct pioneering research on testing and modelling of coupled thermal-hydro-mechanical performance of energy foundations. You will work with enthusiastic academia and students in the Section of Geotechnics and Geology.

This energy foundation project will develop a Solar-Geothermal Energy Pile (SGPile) system, to address the current limitations of the current ground source heat pumps (GSHP) in building heating/cooling systems. Detailed experiments and numerical analyses will be conducted to investigate the thermal and structural performance of energy foundations, and to provide guidance on the new design method. Digital twins will be developed to integrate the test data with the simulation, and to optimize the thermal performance of the system without compromising the structural safety.

Postdoc  summary/title:– Postdoc in novel routes to ammonia – DTU Energy

If you are looking for a challenging task related to the green transition of the energy sector here is a great opportunity. We are seeking a Postdoc to strengthen our research on new electrochemical routes to green ammonia. You will assist in establishing advanced experimental setups and use these to explore what limits achievable synthesis rates and how to improve these.

Transforming our society to rely only on sustainable energy sources is a massive challenge. Key to success will be development of cost competitive routes to produce hydrogen via electrolysis of water/steam driven by green electricity. The hydrogen has value in itself but  may, importantly, also serve as a reactant for production of ammonia. Ammonia has great importance as a fertilizer but can also be an “energy vector” enabling emission reduction from “hard to electrify” sectors like global shipping. Hence, cost competitive routes to “green hydrogen” and “green ammonia”, not relying on use of natural gas, is in high demand.

The research is a part of the project “Progress”, where the ambition is to facilitate integration of the hydrogen production step and the ammonia synthesis step to enable an efficient route to ammonia driven only by electrical energy. If the solid oxide cell applied is a proton conducting ceramic, controlling the potential and current allows control of the hydrogen activity at the electrode surface. It is the hypothesis behind the project that careful control of this and possibly cycling it may enable an overall more efficient process.

Postdoc  summary/title:– Postdoc in improved solid oxide electrolysis cells – DTU Energy

If you are looking for a challenging task related to the green transition of the energy sector, here is a great opportunity. We are seeking a Postdoc to strengthen our research and development activities on improving solid oxide electrolysis cells. In focus will be the oxygen electrode of the cell and the interconnect plates, which are used as auxiliary components when stacking individual cells. The overall aim is to improve durability of both components and in addition to develop improved methodologies to describe their performance.

Transforming our society to rely only on sustainable energy sources is a massive challenge. Key to success will be development of cost competitive routes to produce hydrogen via electrolysis of water/steam driven by green electricity. The hydrogen has value in itself, but may, importantly, also serve as a reactant for production of ammonia, methanol or other valuable chemicals, that can serve as “energy vectors” enabling emission reduction from “hard to electrify” sectors like global shipping. Hence, cost competitive routes to “green hydrogen” and “green fuels”, not relying on use of natural gas, is in high demand.

It is highly desirable to lower the operation temperature of the technology to allow longer operational life. To realize such a temperature reduction, one needs improved electrodes for the oxygen evolution reaction occurring at the cell anode. In defining the optimal temperature of operation, it is further important to consider the interconnect-plates applied when stacking multiple cells to build electrolysis modules. The corrosion rate, that dictates the life-time of the interconnect, decreases with decreasing temperature. However, at a certain temperature, the diffusion of Cr in the alloy may become too slow to re-form a protective scale at the surface and hence the interconnect becomes prone to so-called break-away corrosion which will lead to overall failure of the stack.

Postdoc  summary/title:– Postdoc in detection and quantification of fugitive emissions – DTU Sustain

DTU Sustains section Climate and Monitoring offers a 2½-year position as a post-doctoral fellow in detection and quantification of fugitive greenhouse gas emissions.

You will be a part of a larger project focusing on innovations in remote sensing for better measurement of greenhouse gas emissions, which is a collaboration with DTU Electro, manufacturers of laser products, leading providers of gas measurement services and consultants with a global outreach.

The problem addressed is direct emissions of greenhouse gases from industries, utilities, agriculture etc. Minimizing those emissions is of great importance in the effort to mitigate climate change. To minimize direct emissions, accurate and cost-effective measurement methods and instruments are needed to evaluate emissions from various processes, components etc. and to inform facilities in case of defects, which cause increased emissions. We will develop and test both vehicle-based, drone-based and fence-line monitoring applications of laser detection of gaseous emissions from various sources.

KhaosGuard is a 4-year project supported by Innovation Fund Denmark’s Grand Solutions program. The project so far has been in a development phase. You will enter the project in the beginning of the testing phase, where we will conduct the first tests at different facilities such as wastewater treatment plants.
