We are seeking a postdoctoral research associate who will study the dynamics of low-energy, high-charge ion beams. This project will utilize the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) Beam Test Facility, a front-end replica with advanced diagnostics. This position resides in the Accelerator Physics Group in the Accelerator Science and Technology Section, Research Accelerator Division, Neutron Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  

You will be part of a dynamic team working on multiple aspects of this problem. You will have a chance to learn about specialized diagnostics, particularly for high dynamic range and high dimensional measurement of particle beam distributions. This project is motivated by the limitation presented by uncontrolled beam loss to the performance of high-power accelerators such as the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS). The goal of this work is to demonstrate predictive modeling of beam distributions in a realistic accelerator, and as such includes an emphasis on computation modeling.

(04) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc  summary/title:– Postdoctoral Research Associate -Polymer Chemist

We are seeking two Postdoctoral Research Associates. One will focus on the synthesis and characterization of dynamic polymers to elucidate their non-equilibrium states, and another will focus on polymer upcycling especially deconstruction of various commercial step-growth polymers. This position resides in the Soft Materials and Membranes group in the Separation and Polymer Chemistry section, Chemical Sciences Division, Physical Sciences Directorate, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  

As part of our team, the postdoc will synthesize novel dynamic polymers and conduct in-depth characterization especially using rheometer combined with Raman and dielectric spectroscopy as well as small-angle neutron scattering. The project is highly collaborative and the candidate will work with other polymer scientists, rheologists, computational chemists, as well as neutron scattering experts. In polymer upcycling project, the postdoc will conduct deconstruction of various commercial products of step-growth polymers by working with an industry collaborator as well as investigate fundamental science of polymer deconstruction and upcycling. The postdocs are expected to be involved with other polymer science projects such as the development of polymer composites, adhesives, building materials, and polymer electrolytes for energy storage and conversion.

The Postdoctoral Research Associate will focus on scientific projects to advance our understanding of energy materials critical for carbon neutral technologies, under realistic conditions. You will work as part of a team whose interest include, but are not limited to, charge-discharge process in batteries, adsorption behaviors of MOFs & zeolite and gas-solid interaction in heterogeneous catalyst.

In this role, you will: (1) Develop in situ capabilities for neutron scattering instruments at POWGEN/NOMAD at SNS and POWDER/WAND² at HFIR, (2) Perform elastic and inelastic neutron scattering measurements on relevant powder samples under in situ conditions, (3) Combine neutron scattering data with complementary techniques at ORNL, to understand the structure-property relationship of energy materials critical for carbon neutral technologies.

The research will focus on developing multilayer semiconducting polymer films, involving all aspects of monomer and polymer synthesis, small molecule and polymer characterization, film preparation by solution casting or layer-by-layer deposition, and thermomechanical testing on the synthesized polymeric materials. Additionally, based on property characterization and evaluations, polymer compostions will need to be modified and optimized through manipulation/alteration of functionality, topology and/or degree of polymerization. The ability to adjust chemistry to achieve control and optimization of interfacial reactions and transport properties between different types of layers (polymer and non-polymer) will also be critical. In this position, the postdoc will work as part of an interdisciplinary team working towards the development of novel conductive devices. We are seeking a Postdoc who will focus on microstructural characterizations of nuclear ceramics and mechanistic modeling of the material degradation behavior under nuclear reactor relevant environments. The Postdoctoral Research Associate will contribute to the development of novel modeling and characterization frameworks that will be based on 1) simulation or characterization of the microstructures of ceramics using 3D characterization techniques, 2) establishing connections between material structure and mechanical properties, 3) predicting the behavior of ceramics under extreme environments. Moreover, the candidate will contribute to the constitutive modeling frameworks and develop image-based models for high-temperature ceramics. Knowledge and experience of relevant characterization techniques, including x-ray computed tomography, scanning electron microscopy, or other microscopy 3D techniques, is desirable. These modeling and microscopy approaches will be combined with experimental data to evaluate various ceramic materials. Demonstrated experience in implementing nonlinear constitutive models in commercial finite element (FE) codes is desirable. You will be expected to collaborate with research staff and industry partners focused on material research and development through computational modeling and multimodal characterization.

The successful candidate will focus their research efforts on understanding the fate and transformation of Hg under a broad range of environmental conditions (temperature, humidity) in engineered and natural settings.  Specific tasks include design and execution of independent experiments, working independently and within a team in lab and field settings collecting, processing, and preserving samples, and processing and analyzing the samples in the laboratory. Summarizing research in oral and written format, active participation in internal and external scientific meetings, and publishing research in open peer-reviewed journals is expected.

Opportunities exist to collaborate with skilled researchers in hydrology, geochemistry, environmental microbiology, and ecology within ORNL, at collaborating Universities and other National Laboratories.

This position requires a Ph.D. in environmental chemistry, (bio)geochemistry, soil science, civil/environmental engineering, or a related discipline. Experience in Hg research, knowledge of materials characterization and analysis methods, applying (bio)geochemical models, and the analysis of kinetic data are desired. We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will focus on performing controlled synthesis and understanding growth mechanisms of 2D materials and heterostructures, especially transition metal dichalcogenides.  Our team uses bottom-up synthesis techniques including CVD, MOCVD, and PECVD, coupled with in situ diagnostic methods to characterize both the growth environment and the emerging nanomaterial structure for their applications in microelectronics and quantum information science. This position resides in the Functional Hybrid Nanomaterials (FHN) Group in the Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences (CNMS), Physical Sciences Directorate, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  

As a postdoc, you will work within a research team at the CNMS that is focused on the synthesis and control of heterogeneities in 2D materials across length scales. Several methods are employed, including traditional approaches such as CVD, PECVD, MOCVD, but also novel, nonequilibrium approaches for bottom-up and top-down growth and doping such as pulsed laser deposition (PLD) and laser processing within optical microscopy environments or within electron microscopes, where control over the kinetic energy of precursor species or pulsed photolytic processes are used to synthesize and process nanomaterials with metastable phases or intermediate states that are predicted to have novel functionalities.  You will also work with the project team to set up and automate CVD systems within situ diagnostics for precision synthesis of 2D materials with real-time adaptive control. The novel materials synthesized in this project will be collaboratively shared with a wide variety of electron microscopists, ultrafast spectroscopists, device experts, and quantum information scientists to explore their functionalities across a wide spectrum of capabilities being developed at ORNL.

The postdoctoral researcher will focus on combined carbon capture and conversion in ionic liquids and aqueous electrolytes. 

This position is funded by an Energy Research Frontier Center (EFRC) – the Center for Understanding and controlling Accelerated and Gradual Evolution of Materials for Energy (UNCAGE-ME III). The goal of this research project is to gain a fundamental understanding of how degradation of catalysts during combined capture and conversion of carbon dioxide using ionic liquids and aqueous electrolytes.

Specifically, how the structure of the electrocatalysts and the surface chemistry of CO2 reduction evolves as a function of the nature and concentration of the contaminants in both aqueous electrolytes and ionic liquids; and capture and conversion can be combined in ionic liquids. Approaches include both experimental and computational studies of kinetics and reactivity, spectroscopic identification of surface reactants and mechanisms under in situ and operando conditions.

Under general supervision, the Postdoctoral Research Associate will conduct research in synthesizing Cu-based electrocatalysts, measuring electrochemistry of CO2 reduction, and conducting in situ measurements (atomic force microscopy) for mechanistic understanding of degradation. The postdoc will work in close collaboration with the EFRC team members at ORNL and other EFRC PIs, and have opportunities to visit members of other EFRC institutions including Lehigh University, Georgia Tech and University of Michigan.  This research program will take advantage of resources at ORNL including the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) and the Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences (CNMS).
