PhD position summary/title:–Phd: Sex and gender differences in the working mechanisms of addiction

The PhD on this project will focus primarily on setting up and performing statistical analyses of these complex longitudinal and physiological data, including dynamic structural equation modelling. In these analyses, you will not only focus on sex-based biological differences (including variations in sex hormone levels) but also sociocultural gender-related differences (including variations in gender expression). Results will be published in scientific articles, with the overall aim to gain insight into the sex- and gender differences in the working mechanisms underlying alcohol use disorder.

(02) Fully Funded PhD Position 

PhD position summary/title:–PhD: Adoption of Functional Agrobiodiversity and Modelling Ecosystem Services

You will be part of a multidisciplinary project (FABforward) on various aspects of functional agrobiodiversity (FAB), funded by the Dutch Research Council (NWO). You will mainly work on economics and ecosystem services of FAB adoption by farmers. The position involves working across multiple research institutes. At the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, you will design and implement a survey and choice experiment aimed at assessing FAB adoption by Dutch farmers. The survey findings will provide input to your work on natural capital models for FAB-related ecosystem services, and on applying these models in a spatially explicit way; this work will be mainly carried out at the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) and Wageningen Environmental Research (WENR). You will be supervised by Dr Mark Koetse and Prof. Pieter van Beukering from IVM, supported by RIVM and WENR staff.

PhD position summary/title:–PhD: Agent-based Modelling of Climate Change Risks & Insurance Solutions

The Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) has a new position for a PhD student in the field of agent-based modelling (ABM) of climate change risks. You will become part of a new interdisciplinary research programme (INSUREADAPT) funded by the European Research Council (ERC). This project aims to design insurance solutions that improve preparedness of households and businesses for multi-hazard climate change risks in the EU, such as floods and storms.

PhD position summary/title:–PhD position Navigating the Leadership–Accountability Dilemma

Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is offering a fully funded, four-year PhD-position on studying how accountability and technical expertise shape leaders’ willingness to take risky decisions. Leadership includes making decisions under uncertainty. Oftentimes, such decisions entail a “safe” option (e.g., one in line with established processes) and a riskier but potentially more beneficial option. Experiencing a high “felt” accountability, the expectation that one will be held accountable for one’s decisions, might propel leaders towards taking the safe option. The PhD candidate would analyse whether having expert knowledge in the core business of the organisation moderates the relationship, such that expert leaders are more willing to choose the risky, less-travelled path, weakening the relationship between felt accountability and playing it safe.

PhD position summary/title:–PhD position on learning with algorithmic technologies in medical diagnosis

Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is offering a fully funded, four-year PhD-position on learning with algorithmic technologies, as part of the NWO-funded project “Learning in artificial intelligence across and beyond occupational communities (LIAISON): Towards effective deployment of novel algorithmic technologies in medical diagnosis”.

Sophisticated algorithms, machine learning, deep learning, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) enable innovative ways of working and learning. A concrete and promising example of this is the use of AI in the domain of radiology. By using AI for diagnosing, radiologists can reduce their day-to-day workload, freeing up time to spend on medically challenging cases. This in turn can lead to more rigorous diagnostic accuracy, increased senses of autonomy in managing one’s daily work.

However, the current use of algorithmic technologies for making such improvements in medical practice has been limited, short-sighted, fragmented, and unsystematic. While organizations and institutions are investing significantly in algorithmic technologies, this does not yet create sustainable, significant, viable values for patients, society, and the healthcare ecosystem.

PhD position summary/title:–PhD Position in Structural Bioinformatics/Computational Biology

Despite decades of dedicated collaborative efforts, we are still missing key elements to develop the perfect electronic nose. A major obstacle is our limited understanding of how the sense of smell works, and how odorant sensors should be designed for smell detection. The project ODORWISEjoins advanced computer simulation techniques together with available results from experiments to study how the proteins in our noses can detect and distinguish different chemicals. The outcome will aid the design of new biomimetic sensor units for detecting smells, which will be a significant advancement for early disease diagnosis and surveillance in non-invasive sustainable healthcare. PhD position summary/title:–PhD Antibiotics Resistance

Antibiotic resistance is a major and ever-increasing health threat, projecting to result in 10 million deaths annually by 2050. An often-overlooked cause for this resistance is the fact that many antibacterial agents are unable to effectively target intracellular bacteria. Hidden inside their host cells, these intracellular bacteria can manipulate the immune system, evade immune surveillance and/or find shelter in intracellular compartments to escape antibacterial agents.

In the NWO-funded project Chiron, we aim to address this pressing issue by developing novel carriers and innovative infection models (both 2D and 3D) to eradicate these intracellular pathogens and unveil underlying mechanisms driving resistance.

This project offers a unique opportunity for interdisciplinary and international collaboration, particularly with the Radboudumc Biomaterials research group and several industry partners. The candidate, alongside our team, will be responsible for research on infection model development, investigating resistant mechanisms and assessing the effectiveness of the novel drug carriers.

PhD position summary/title:–PhD Student Position in Robot Learning and Representation Learning

In your PhD project you will consider the development of new deep learning and robot learning methodologies which can be applied across a variety of robotic platforms. With this you will work at the research frontier by investigating how we can optimize, exploit and generalize across a variety of agent embodiments and create novel reinforcement learning and representation learning approaches. Developing such embodied AI methodologies which do not consider the body of the robot to be static, but changeable and exploitable is a challenging endeavor with impact to both industry & science, and a lot of open and exciting research questions. PhD position summary/title:–PhD: Statistical physics of chromosomes

The physical organization of bacterial chromosomes is inherently variable, with large conformational fluctuations both from cell to cell and over time. Yet, chromosomes must also be structured to facilitate processes such as transcription, replication, and segregation. In this project, you will combine data-driven theoretical methods with mechanistic models to unravel the statistical folding of chromosomes. You will use approaches grounded in equilibrium and non-equilibrium statistical physics, information theory, and soft condensed matter physics. Your work will be performed in close collaboration with several experimental groups. Finally, you will also play a role in supervising students and the tutorial classes in our teaching program.
