PhD position summary/title:–ENAC – PhD Position in modeling social and environmental performance of buildings
The ETHOS Lab (Engineering and Technology for Human Oriented Sustainability) is seeking PhD students to work on projects related to inference, modeling, and optimization of social and environmental performance of commercial buildings.
Hybrid working and other evolving patterns of behavior have added an additional layer of complexity to optimal management of building spaces and the organizations who use them. To address this complexity, we must expand our understanding of human experiences, performance, and well-being in buildings. Our research will therefore involve the development of tools and methods for better characterizing occupant behavioral dynamics in buildings and the social and environmental performance of buildings, leveraging survey-based and data-driven methodologies. Students will have the opportunity to engage in real-world analysis and experimentation in partnership with the Smart Living Lab at EPFL Fribourg, where ETHOS is based.

PhD position summary/title:–ENAC – PhD position in Terrestrial Biosphere Modeling
The Catchment Hydrology and Geomorphology Lab (CHANGE) led by Prof. Sara Bonetti at EPFL in Sion is looking for a PhD student to work on the SNSF-funded project SMART-AGRI (A global spatially-explicit quantification of the benefits of climate-smart agricultural practices under future climates).
Sustainable food production requires finding the right balance between food and nutritional security while protecting the environment and addressing climate issues. Climate‐smart agriculture has been promoted as a systematic approach for developing agricultural strategies that ensure food security in the context of climate change. However, a detailed quantification of the effects of such practices across different environmental settings and under future climates is currently missing, making it difficult to assess their actual potential. The SMART-AGRI project aims to leverage terrestrial biosphere modeling to quantify the benefits of different climate-smart practices across global cropland areas, and identify the combinations of practices that concurrently optimize multiple objectives (from crop production to climate change mitigation and preservation of environmental resources). As a PhD student, you will have the opportunity to further current understanding in this field through numerical model development and global-scale simulations of coupled water, energy, carbon, and nutrient dynamics under current and future climates.
Deadline : June 30th

PhD position summary/title:–ENAC – PhD Positions (LEV)
The objective of this PhD project is to determine how different air compositions affect the physical-chemical microenvironment in aerosol particles and droplets, and how this microenvironment in turn affects the stability of a suite of respiratory viruses. The work involves kinetic experiments in drops and in aerosol particles, as well as molecular virology experiments to determine inactivation mechanisms.
We are looking for candidates with a Master’s degree in environmental sciences, microbiology, biochemistry, chemistry or a related field. Prior experience in microbiology and an interest in aerosol science and public health is beneficial. The successful applicant will closely collaborate with PhD students and a postdoc and a technician in LEV, as well as with our collaborators at University of Zurich, ETHZ and Emory University. A good command of both spoken and written English is essential.
We offer a fully funded 4-year position in stimulating international research environment, good research infrastructures and resources, a competitive salary, and the opportunity to live and work along the shores of beautiful Lake Geneva.

PhD position summary/title:–ENAC – PhD Position in Physics-Informed Machine Learning For Mechanics of Material Failure (LMD)
The Data-Driven Mechanics Laboratory is seeking a highly motivated doctoral student to study physics- and thermodynamics-informed machine learning (ML) for the mechanics of material failure. The project focuses on learning the effective behavior of materials of civil engineering interest (granular geomaterials, structural materials) arising from complex microstructural mechanisms involving inelasticity and friction, as well as potential multiphysics couplings. It promises to push the boundaries of constitutive and multiscale modeling for these materials.

PhD position summary/title:–SB – PhD in Pressure tuning and symmetry breaking in frustrated quantum magnets (LQM)
When magnetic interactions in a material are competing, it is termed “frustrated” and many exotic quantum properties may occur. This PhD project is focused on investigating and tuning of phases of such frustrated quantum magnets by using extreme conditions of low temperatures and high pressures. The candidate will perform inelastic neutron scattering experiments on cold and thermal neutron spectrometers at the ILL as well as use supporting techniques such as synchrotron X-ray diffraction and specific heat measurements at the LQM.
We offer a challenging and exciting project in the field of experimental quantum magnetism under the supervision of Prof. Henrik M. Rønnow (EPFL) and instrument scientist Dr. Ursula B. Hansen (ILL). The project is based at the ILL for the first 2 years followed by 2 years at the EPFL. The candidate will benefit from the full integration in these dynamic and international research communities.
We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a master in physics or related fields. The successful candidate has a strong command of solid-state physics and quantum mechanics, good communication skills in English (spoken and written) and a willingness to learn and engage in challenging research. Programming skill in Python or MATLAB as well as prior experience with neutron or X-ray scattering is a plus but not mandatory.

PhD position summary/title:–CDM-PhD position at PASU lab
The Policy & Sustainability (PASU) lab at EPFL is looking for two PhD students to join our team to work on a new SNSF-funded project on Managing a Just Transition to Net Zero. This project’s overall ambition is to measure economic and labor market threats caused by the transition to net zero, as well as to identify effective policies to address these risks. Questions include: How vulnerable are workers and regional labor markets to decarbonization? What occupations may be particularly exposed? How difficult is it for at-risk workers for find new jobs? How effective are ‘just transition’ policies? How should policies be designed to reduce hostility to net zero targets?
