Postdoc  summary/title:– Post-Doctoral Research Visit F/M Formal modeling and analysis for automated transportation systems

The onset of climate change and widespread geopolitical conflicts and social inequalities showcase the need for innovation and change that require a better world. Now technologies like artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, robotics and other related technologies are making such a world all the more feasible. The A-IQ Ready project aims to introduce and materialise an intelligent autonomous ECS (Electronic Component and System) fit for our digital age and utilise crucial technologies, like edge continuum orchestration for artificial intelligence, distributed collaborative intelligence and quantum sensing, which could prove revolutionary for most services and industries. These technologies and their combination will propel the transition to a Europe of Society 5.0.

The activities of CONVECS focus on the formal modeling and verification of asynchronous concurrent systems, which are instantiated in various domains (communication protocols, distributed algorithms, embedded systems, networks-on-chip, etc.). To this aim, CONVECS proposes new generation formal languages for specifying the behavior and the properties of concurrent systems, and devises efficient verification algorithms and tools running in the CADP verification toolbox, which assists the various phases of the design process (compilation and rapid prototyping, interactive and guided simulation, model checking and equivalence checking, conformance test generation, co-simulation, performance evaluation) and is widely used in academia and industry.

(20) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc  summary/title:– Post-Doctoral Research Visit F/M Event detection for Large-Scale Physical Simulations

While artificial intelligence is growing at a fast pace, the bulk of the world’s computing power remains targeted at modeling and predicting physical phenomena, such as climate models, weather forecasting, or nuclear physics. These simulations are run on highly parallel supercomputers on which both the hardware and the software are optimized for the task at hand. While the computing power of each processing unit is still increasing, the communication networks and the storage capabilities in these clusters do not follow such fast trends. As a result, computing nodes produce outputs faster than what can be stored or sent to process elsewhere: These simulations are IO-bound.

To reduce the communication burden, a promising venue is in situ computations, meaning that most of the data is processed locally by the nodes, and only meaningful aggregates are stored or sent over the network. However, this is a difficult problem in general since to detect meaningful information for the global simulation, one often needs to detect particular events, requiring non-local information that depends on the other nodes’ output. The goal of this postdoc is to leverage machine learning techniques to bypass IO bottlenecks in the context of physics simulation on high-performance computing (HPC) clusters and help steer them optimally. This work is thus placed in a broader “Machine Learning for Science” context, which aims at using ML to solve key problems arising in traditional sciences. More specifically, we will focus on distributed event detection techniques, which critically inform where the communication and storage budget needs to be spent to retain most of the information.

(22) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc  summary/title:– Post-Doctoral Research Visit F/M Interpretable Classifier based on Multi-Modal Embeddings for rare classes: Application to identification of marine ecosystems

The success of supervised machine learning has given rise to a new priority, that of being able to interpret the models learned (explainable artificial intelligence, or XAI). The main directions investigated in XAI for computer vision include: building saliency maps  (for example by exploiting the gradient of the classifier); the identification of relevant sub-concepts for the classes under consideration, based on examples and/or the exploitation of sub-images of labelled images. New approaches based on the exploitation of multimodal embeddings, such as those integrated into CLIP, avoid the main limitations of the above guidelines (see [1] and references therein). However, multimodal embeddings reflect common concepts, which hinders their use in specific domains (ranging from biology to industrial environments) where classes involve rare sub-concepts (e.g., “protists”; “planktonic larvae”). Another challenge is to define *frugal* interpretable classifiers, supporting the interaction with researchers and end-users.

The target applications is the characterization of marine ecosystems from the wealth of data collected within the Inria Challenge OcéanIA [2] (see also https://oceania.inria.cl/). This project involves Inria teams in Chile, Paris, Saclay, and Sophia-Antipolis, and the Fondation Tara Océans, the Center of Mathematical Modeling (CMM, U.Chile), the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (PUC), the GO-SEE CNRS Federation, and the Laboratoire des Sciences du Numérique de Nantes (LS2N).
