We seek one PhD candidate and three postdoctoral researchers who have the necessary research experience and language skills to conduct one of the subprojects in Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, or Turkey. (03) Fully Funded PhD Position
PhD position summary/title:– PhD Position in Marine Palynology
You are expected to generate multiple records of organic-walled dinoflagellate cyst assemblages crossing glacial-interglacial transitions from sediment cores that were collected by the British Antarctic Survey and through the International Ocean Discovery Programme. In addition, the project involves the generation of organic geochemical biomarker records from the same sedimentary records, which will complement the reconstruction of ecosystem, ocean and climate variability. Alongside this, there are opportunities to generate sedimentological and inorganic geochemical data on the sediment core as well, which are indicative of both ocean and ice dynamics.
A personalised training programme will be set up, mutually agreed on recruitment, which will reflect both your training needs and career objectives. As part of this training, up to 10% of your time will be dedicated to assisting in the BSc and MSc teaching programmes of the Earth Sciences department.
The position is part of a larger interdisciplinary project, that includes a postdoctoral researcher with whom you will closely collaborate. Both positions are funded by the Dutch National Science Foundation NWO in a special call of the Polar Programme in collaboration with the British Antarctic Survey. The positions are based in the Marine Palynology & Paleoceanography group at the Department of Earth Sciences in Utrecht, NL. Regular visits to the British Antarctic Survey in Cambridge, UK, are foreseen, e.g. for scientific discussions and to perform analyses.

PhD position summary/title:– PhD position in Protonic Ceramic Fuel Cell Technology
You will delve into investigating and characterising the pore network of thin, porous electrode layers using advanced imaging techniques such as Micro Computational Tomography (uCT) and Focused Ion Beam-Scanning Electron Microscopy (FIB-SEM). Analysing the pore network will yield crucial insights into parameters like porosity, pore size distribution, and connectivity, guiding electrode development. Subsequently, degraded electrodes will be characterized to aid in devising degradation mitigation strategies.
Additionally, you will simulate two-phase flow at the pore scale to determine permeability and assess fluid transport quality, upscaling microscale parameters for macro-scale simulations to define Darcy-scale physical properties and facilitate cell-level performance analysis.

PhD position summary/title:– PhD position in Mathematics of Spatial Networks
In recent years, there has been a significant surge of interest in networks, which now play a fundamental role in modern science and society. The network-like structures are widely discussed, from cosmology and communication to economics and ecology. Even at the nanoscale, in materials science, they may offer potential theoretical explanations for material properties. Despite their popularity, the mathematical foundations underlying networks remain incompletely understood. Spatial networks are especially challenging as they derive their graph-theoretical properties from local constraints imposed by the embedding metric space.
The aim of this fully funded PhD position is to develop the mathematical theory of spatial networks, and to explain why these networks exhibit specific emergent properties on a macro scale. Unlike conventional graphs, spatial networks exist within an embedding space, allowing us to consider well-defined scaling limits and to “zoom out,” viewing them as continua. Leveraging on the expertise of the network group
in Utrecht, you will establish a framework for these limits and apply them to partial differential equations that arise. As such you will attempt to bridge the local topological constraints of networks with their global behaviour.

You will collaborate closely with veterinary clinicians and clinical pharmacists to develop protocols for the Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) preparation of liposomal formulations. You take a lead role in the preparation and testing of liposomes with anti-leishmania drugs, focusing on quality control, stability, and efficacy.
You’ll coordinate the project to offer liposomal treatments to veterinary patients, ensuring reproducibility and sterility of the final product. And evaluate the efficacy of liposomal formulations through clinical observation and parameter monitoring in veterinary patients.

The PhD position is part of the European PhD Training network SurfEx
,funded by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (EU programme for doctoral education). The project uses the nematode C. elegans as a model system. PhD position summary/title:– PhD Position: Accelerating the Transition to a Circular Textile Economy
The extensive use of land, water, energy, and chemicals makes the textile industry one of the most polluting sectors worldwide. Both the Dutch government and the European Commission aim to improve the circularity of the textile sector to ensure a sustainable future. The Dutch Circular Economy programme highlights the necessity of behaviour change and the adoption of circular principles, such as the use of second-hand platforms and the dissuasion of fast-fashion consumption, to name two examples. Central to the programme is the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), which in principles is meant to encourage producers and retailers in the Dutch textile industry to change their business models and enhance textile collection efforts.
This PhD project aims to accelerate the transition to a circular textile economy by leveraging the Mission-specific Innovation Systems (MIS) framework. This framework provides a systems perspective to study the dynamics of diffusion and implementation of innovation. It maps the actors, networks, and institutions involved, assesses system performance, and identifies barriers to achieving societal missions through innovation. Until now, the MIS has mainly focused on technological innovation but in this project we also want to focus on the social innovations that are needed to accelerate the transition towards circular textiles. The research will focus on integrating both technological and social innovations and will focus on those R strategies that involve behavioural change and new business models. The project will map the mental models of various stakeholders within the Mission-specific Innovation System (MIS), assess the viability of circular business models, and provide intervention options for stakeholders in the innovation ecosystem that might be needed to supplement the shortcomings of existing mechanisms, such as some aspects of EPR.

PhD position summary/title:– PhD Position on Evolution of Stress Response Networks across the Plant Kingdom
With a budget of 96 million Euro over the next decade, CropXR focuses on creating eXtra Resilient (XR), sustainable, and climate-adaptive crops. By combining plant biology, simulation modelling, and artificial intelligence we aim to develop ‘smart breeding and cultivation’ methods to speed up breeding for complex resilience traits in different growing systems for several crops. This collaborative effort involves four universities, numerous companies, and encompasses scientific research, data collection and sharing, education, and practical applications in agriculture and plant breeding.
This PhD position is part of a project within the CropXRs core research programme. The project will study the evolution of the regulatory responses of plants to abiotic stresses such as temperature and drought. These networks will be investigated both in model plants and crop species, using bioinformatics and comparative genomics on genomic and transcriptomic datasets. This knowledge can be directly used in breeding for more resilient crops.
