Green hydrogen is key to decarbonizing many hard-to-abate sectors, but it is not yet economically viable in most cases. This postdoc position investigates the impact of different financing schemes (e.g., public, private, blended) on the feasibility of green hydrogen by use case. Beyond the economic feasibility, a particular focus of this position will lie on the evaluation of different development pathways when deploying green hydrogen infrastructure, depending on the geographical and economic context. It will include a deep dive on the potential of Ukraine to become a green hydrogen hub, leveraging geo-spatial energy models run by project partners. As such, this position contributes directly to the strategy of rebuilding the Ukrainian energy infrastructure and it develops financing options to scale green hydrogen around the world. Project partners include the University of Oxford, Imperial College London and Ukrainian and British policymakers.

We are offering one postdoc position to a highly motivated researcher with a background in geography and urban ecology with experience in modeling, GIS and data synthesis. Their work will determine how urban features drive species diversity, how species diversity and urban features are represented in soundscapes and how these relate to human health and wellbeing. They will use modeling approaches to combine natural and social science data. You will focus on developing and implementing mixed modeling approaches to test pathways through which structure–biodiversity relationships are linked to acoustic comfort–restoration outcomes. The models will integrate spatially-explicit structural complexity variables, landscape imperviousness variables, biodiversity (songbird) variables, and human restoration variables. We aim to produce maps of model predictions based on biodiversity indices, restoration variables in relation to urban green and built infrastructure.

The working researchers at the newly established Professorship of Energy Management Technologies are focusing on the design and evaluation of innovative data- and machine learning-based systems to integrate more renewable energy into our energy systems and make energy use more efficient. We develop new optimization methods, machine learning algorithms, and prototypical systems controlling complex energy systems like buildings, electricity distribution grids and thermal systems for a sustainable future. These systems coordinate distributed renewable generation like solar and wind, flexible loads like heat pumps and electric vehicles, and distributed energy storage like stationary batteries and hydrogen storage to maximize energy efficiency while keeping the grid reliable and secure. Our research method is engineering-oriented, prototype-driven, and highly interdisciplinary. Our typical research process includes the evaluation of existing systems, extensive simulation-based analyses, as well as the implementation and validation of algorithm and system designs in real world settings.

We are looking for an outstanding and highly motivated applicant to join our team at MIRMI to pursue the research and development of safe and robust remote robot controllers for our tele-surgical platform. The system consists of three robot arms on the patient site and two haptic consoles on the surgeon site. The ultimate goal is to develop a highly visio-tactile transparent tele-surgical platform that benefits from the next generation of communication protocols. The performance of communication channels in remote surgery and associated control issues are studied. The controller needs to be robust and fault-tolerant, and handle the possible jammings in the communication to maintain the continuous operation of robots. The proposed approaches are implemented in our tele-surgical platform as well as other available industrial platforms. Along with this research, we would like to exploit high-bandwidth and low-latency communication networks to transfer essentially part or all of resource-intensive planning, learning and control computation to the edge and beyond. This transfer will allow the robots to be significantly lighter, more modular, and more energy efficient.

The position stems out of the large scale 6G-life project ( https://6g-life.de/ ) and will give you a unique opportunity to work in the field of robotics that operate with 6G communication technologies for both healthcare and industrial settings . Additionally, the methods and findings developed throughout this work will be scalable and applicable to other research projects in MIRMI. You will work closely with supervisors and researchers from MIRMI (in both Munich and Garmisch-Partenkirchen Campuses) and report the system design and developments to our project officers and founders. The research findings are expected to be published in leading journals and conferences in the robotics community.

Teaching duties include independent supervision of the university internship PNSS (Numerical Flow Simulation Internship) and holding exercises in the subjects “Fundamentals of Numerical Fluid Mechanics” in the BSc Mechanical Engineering and “Vector/Tensor Calculus and Balance Equations” in the BSc Engineering Sciences as well as participation in examinations.

The department develops methods for the numerical prediction of flow noise and applies them to specific cases (sound generation from the flow around obstacles in ducts and pipes and from propellers in multicopter configurations). Your research task is the further development and application of high-resolution Navier-Stokes solution methods (DNS; LES) for source term prediction in conjunction with sound prediction using LEE or LPCE in a hybrid CFD/CAA method and the validation of the results by comparison with measurements and mode-locking approaches.

The Chair of Psychology & Digital Mental Health Care in the School of Medicine & Health (headed by Prof. Dr. David Daniel Ebert) is concerned with the research of mental illnesses and their prevention and treatment at the interface between clinical and health psychology research. One focus of the chair is on the development, establishment and evaluation of psychological and psychotherapeutic interventions (web applications, apps) for mental health promotion, prevention and treatment of mental disorders. The focus is on the evaluation of effectiveness, mechanisms, moderators and cost-effectiveness in the context of clinical studies and meta-analyses (of individual patient data). In addition, the implementation of innovative treatment methods in standard care is sought and scientifically supported with partners from industry. The aim of our group is to improve the understanding of the trade-offs between production, mitigation and conservation in livestock-based systems, and to identify innovative mechanisms for landscape-level management. Our group combines empirical work (with experiments in the field and in the lab) and modeling techniques. The focus of this postdoctoral position is the generation of empirical datasets for livestock systems in contrasting sites around the world. The research program will examine productivity of grasslands, nutrient stocks and cycling and their relationship to biodiversity. We conduct experiments in the field to understand how grazing influences grassland productivity and their stability, aiming to detect indicators of early restoration success. This work is conducted in collaboration with various partners in Europe, such as Lancaster University in the UK, the Argentinean National Research Council (CONICET) and the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), based in Kenya.
Your tasks:
will be to design and conduct experiments at various scales from laboratory manipulations of animal-plant-soil systems including controlled experiments under varying environmental conditions, to large field-scale experiments with wild and domestic grazers. These experiments will test hypotheses related to the effects on nutrient cycling of grazers with different body size and grazing habits and duration of grazing. You will collaborate with data scientists to integrate empirical and novel evidence to improve the understanding of functioning of grasslands, producing novel data for the tropics and sub-tropics.

TUM’s new Computational Pathology and Medical Machine Learning lab (*2021) develops methods of machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) for the analysis of digital pathology images and related medical data in order to detect, segment and quantify diseases such as cancer. Further applications are the discovery of new biomarkers and the prognosis of outcome for patients. For modeling, we use both public and proprietary clinical and research data and generate our own repository of digital pathology images. The Electric Vehicle (EV) Lab of the Institute of Automotive Engineering addresses topics related to electric mobility in three teams – from powertrain components such as the high-voltage battery to vehicle design and the integration of vehicles into mobility and energy systems. We improve the efficiency, sustainability and economics of electric vehicles by optimizing and accelerating the integration of components up to complex mobility systems through practical and laboratory tests as well as sophisticated simulations. We not only publish research results gained at numerous conferences and in journals, but also make our software available in open source to continuously expand the state of the art.
